EDITORIAL – Spiritual Warfare Awareness Training (SWAT)

INTRODUCTION

We often hear our earthly existence referred to as the 'Game of Life.' Although life might be considered a game to some, according to scripture, spiritual life definitely is not meant to be a walk in the park! "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms" (Eph. 6:12). As it is better to treat the cause of the disease rather than the symptoms, we must realize that physicality is mostly a manifest symptom of deeper spiritual causes and motivations. So, what are some of the things that we must struggle against here in the West?

THE ONE MAN BAND

Independence is the 'virtue' that rose out of the American Revolution, a rightful reaction against British autocracy. But the great American celebration of individuality, and the cultural suggestion that reliance on others may be a weakness, has seeped into the Body of Christ and weakened its defenses against an all-present enemy. Our contemporary culture of independence, with the Fourth of July being its holiday, is just the opposite of the biblical world view. "Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him that is alone when he falls, and has not another to lift him up. Again, if two lie together, then they have warmth; but how can one be warm alone? And if a man prevail against him that is alone, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken." (Ecc. 4:9-12).

TEAM MINISTRY

Wherever I have traveled around the world during the course of my ministry, one thing stands out. Those successful ministries that are successfully impacting their communities, whether they are churches, movements or denominations, always reflect some aspect of team ministry based on the five-fold ministries of Ephesians 4:11. Even many of the relatively high number of independent churches and ministries in the United States are beginning to see the value of networking with others. Substituting interdependence for independence, they are learning to function as a team. The days of the 'one man band' in ministry are long gone. God has us in a new season now.

FOR THE SAKE OF THE MISSION

I recently watched a documentary on SWAT teams, which outlined some operational principles for success that the church would be very wise to heed. The first was, 'We must be prepared to forgo comfort for the sake of the mission.' In a culture where our Christianity has become just another option among the many vying for our attention, no great level of commitment can be expected when there is no strong sense of mission, especially if it may mean putting our lives on the line. The American church has to jolt itself out of the 'holy social club' mentality and recapture the sense of a cause worth dying for. Our comfortable Christianity is a diversion from our God-given mission. So what if the air-conditioning is broken, let's still go to church!

TRUST THE ONE YOU'RE WITH

The level of trust in a swat team is astonishing. All members have their own level of responsibility, and must trust the other members to do their job. The survival of each member and the success of the mission depend on the level of trust that can be established. It's time for the church to put away suspicions and realize that only when we are unified can the Lord truly build the house. We must trust each other with our lives. We must cover each other's backs and vulnerabilities. Each member of the SWAT team understands his responsibility to shield the blind spots of his teammates.

THE GOLDEN RULE
The SWAT team's golden rule is to never enter a room or territory by yourself. A lone wolf in ministry will have very little lasting effect, but together we can subdue a whole region. In spiritual terms, let us speak out, proclaim, declare, rebuke, announce and pray together, knowing full well that one can only put a thousand to flight, but when we all link arms together, the sky is the limit. The devil does not play by any rules. The way to defeat him is to play by team's rules. Let's go out together and SWAT all those spiritual flies, to the glory of God!

FEEDBACK…

"Hi Jeff, Just read your article on the present mixture and mediocrity (FMI Report May '03, "Master of the Mixed Message"). Excellent. Thanks. I firmly believe that the Lord is trying to draw our attention to this right now. I have been receiving some frightening stuff just recently about the reasons why the church of the western world is so relatively powerless when contrasted to the church in the third world. More educated and more sophisticated and contemporary, but less empowered. It's a challenging hour. Never-the-less there are some wonderful brethren out there who are seeing a measure of breakthrough which is encouraging also. Warm regards & God bless, David McCracken, Trumpet Call Ministries, Australia."

"Dear Jeff, What an excellent observation of our post-modern society (FMI Report May '03, "Master of the Mixed Message").  I am very interested in the affects of pop culture on the souls of Americans.  I’ll review Ponich’s book with interest.  I also lament the emasculation and pro-feminist attitude of our society.  More equality between the genders was a good thing, but I think we lost an understanding of our God-given roles in the process.  Thanks for keeping me informed! Beverly Cook, Communications Director, Concerts of Prayer, Greater New York."

"Bro. Jeff... Good to see you at the Pentecost Rally.  The article "Master of the Mixed Message" was powerful (FMI Report, May '03).  I could feel the anointing as I read it. (And I want you to know that I am not one to make that kind of a statement on a whim!). Blessings... Pastor Earl Munyan, Bayonne AG, NJ"

JUNE EVENTS…

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER FOR THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM, MAY 30 - Event hosts Eagles Wings Ministries, sent this report partly reproduced here, "Leaders from across America joined together in solidarity for this event, sensing the urgent need to pray for the peace of Jerusalem at this time in history. Dr. Jack Hayford’s presence was a powerful sign to the church in New York. He conveyed his deep passion for Israel and expressed his conviction that we need to posture ourselves towards God’s chosen people. Dr. Hayford spoke several times during the week’s events, bringing the word of the Lord and voicing his strong support for all the Lord is doing through this critical initiative. The many leaders joining us in this milestone of Church history were: James Goll, Mike Bickle, John Paul Jackson, Bob Weiner, Don Finto, Larry Kreider, Gary Bergel, and many others.  Consul General of Israel in New York, Ambassador Alon Pinkas gave a word of encouragement regarding the importance of standing with the people of Israel. On the state of Christian-Jewish relations, he remarked, “The current relationship has been cultivated and nurtured by the American people.” Rabbi Dr. Gerald Meister, the Christian Affairs Advisor to the Consulate of Israel in New York, addressed those in attendance in regards to truth and hope that has been sustained between the people of Israel and the Evangelical community."

PASTOR SAL BELLINI 1947 - 2003
On several occasions over the last couple of years, we have asked you to pray for the health problems of Pastor Sal Bellini, the senior pastor at Word of Life Christian Ministries, Dover, NJ. On Sunday, June 8, Pastor Sal went to be with the Lord. He will be greatly missed as a good friend to me and also as an inspiration and support to many in the Body of Christ here in New Jersey. It is our loss, but Heaven's gain. Our love, condolences and support go to his wife, Linda, son Brandon and all the church family at Word of Life.  Donations can be sent to the Make a Wish Foundation or to Word of Life Christian Ministries, 67 Bassett Hwy Dover NJ 07801.

"Pastor Beacham: I was so blessed by your message this past Sunday at Bayonne First Assembly. I have been deeply depressed for a very long time now, battling it with prayer, medication, etc.  This was the first time in a long time that I was able to get into the Word and be blessed without all my baggage with me. I know I still have a long, long way to go to be fully healed from my depression, but your message was like a breath of fresh air to my soul. It was truly God sent and confirmed a lot for me regarding my pursuing a ministry on the Worship Team once again. I truly thank you for letting the Lord use you in such a mighty, awesome and honest way. Your Sister in Christ, (name withheld)"

"Dear Pastor Beacham, I want to thank you for the blessings that came to me thru your ministry last night. I thank you again for the word that you brought to us and the healings that took place - spiritually and physically. Oh, and I am of the "baby boomer" age and I've always said that our generation is the cause for the troubles that you spoke about and also for sitting back and just letting things take their course.  We protested for things but for the wrong things - we sat back while the world kept taking God out of everywhere.  I too ask forgiveness for this. Well, I took up too much of your time already, thank you once again and may the Lord keep filling you and directing you. Bernadette - Bayonne First Assembly"
