MOMENTS OF REVELATION, FIRE STORM DOWN UNDER & WORLD CLASS LEADERS

WHATSOEVER THINGS ARE OF GOOD REPORT... THINK ON THESE THINGS" PHIL. 4:8

Welcome! What a pleasure it is to be in touch with you again.

We would love to hear from you, so send us your feedback today - don’t forget the ever-popular “GOD THOUGHTS” at the end of this report. Enjoy! JB #

EDITORIAL – DEFINING MOMENTS OF REVELATION

“Greater than the death of flesh, is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril, we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation.”

INTRODUCTION

You would expect that the quote above would have come from some ancient script of wisdom. Profound as it may be, it is actually from a script for the popular sci-fi series, Babylon 5.’ You mean that there are actually some truths spoken by TV and movie script writers? That may come as a shock to some of our more ‘religious’ folk, but let us follow the exhortation from Job 34:3, "For the ear tests words as the tongue tastes food." Surprisingly, among all the ‘dumbed-down,’ profanity laden, and usually liberalized commentaries of Hollywood , there is the occasional gem of insightfulness that rings a bell. Why should we be surprised? At one time, God spoke through a very unlikely vessel; Balaam’s ass was not very holy, but he had a vision and spoke for the Lord! When the church stays silent, God will use anything to get His message across.

PERILOUS TIMES?

Hopes and dreams transcend generations, but there is much that could discourage us right now considering the world's condition. We have nuclear threats from North Korea, imminent war with Iraq, and the tragic loss of the space shuttle with its precious cargo of seven souls, to name just a few of the world’s present woes. Since 9/11, it has been one thing after another and we certainly don’t need any more complications, but the temptation could be to get into navel-gazing mode and to lose sight of our dreams.

WATERED BY DREAMS

This is not the best environment for dreams to flourish, but spiritual life can be even hardier than natural life, popping up and even prospering in the most unlikely conditions. Opportunity and life go together like smoke and fire. Life will take advantage of the smallest opportunity and grow even under the hardest conditions when it is watered by a dream. Vision is the water for your destiny and risk is the soil it grows in. Theodore Roosevelt said, "It is impossible to win the great prizes of life without running risks."

SETTING THE PACE

Every year here in America, we remember Martin Luther King’s birthday with a national holiday, but perhaps we have forgotten one of the most profound things he ever said, "There was a time when the church was very powerful. It was during that period when the early Christians rejoiced when they were deemed worthy to suffer for what they believed. In those days the church was not merely a thermometer that recorded the ideas and principles of popular opinion; it was a thermostat that transformed the mores of society..." The western church needs a vision-infusion so it can be revived back to its former strength and regain its commission of transforming society, instead of just sitting on the sideline and watching the world go by to perdition. We are called to set the pace, not follow behind the blind!

TAKING THE PLUNGE

Moments of revelation take place when we recognize that Providence has granted us a fleeting instant of opportunity which we must seize for our future’s sake. The church has one such moment within its grasp right now. Will we take the plunge?

“I am convinced and sure of this very thing that He Who began a good work in you will continue until the day of Jesus Christ (right up to the time of His return). Developing (that good work) and perfecting and bringing it into full completion in you.” (Philippians 1:6 AMP) #

FEEDBACK…

“Jeff - I just wanted to say thanks for the continued newsletters. [The Editorial: “What Lies Beneath…” FMI Report Dec. ‘02] hit home, as I am facing some tough decisions right now. The easy way would be to turn my back on or postpone the desires deep in my heart; the hard would be to go ahead in faith as the path would be narrow and rocky indeed. I am praying and looking to Him for guidance and waiting on Him for direction. Your December newsletter has reminded me that God did not give me a spirit of fear and to cast all my care on Him. It also reminds me that the hard way here on earth is what is necessary, as the enemy is not one of kindness but one of cruelty and I would rather face the enemy with Jesus by my side then face my heavenly Father and be like vomit before Him. My Father continues to impact me, challenge me and mould me. It excites me to no end as I learn, at times in the most unusual ways. My love to you all. Your sister in Christ, Alison Gilmore, Australia."

"Dear Jeff, the Sunday that you preached at church (Calvary AG, Staten Island , Sept. 22) a man that I had invited got there just before your message. His name is Eli and he is an Israeli Jew and a veteran from the 1973 war, with bullet holes and all. The first man to greet him was a messianic Jew. Mark recognized him as a European Jew by his clothes. After church he came to my house for dinner, where he said that when he walked into church he felt the love of the people. He then felt as if your entire message was for him and everyone there knew that and knew all about him. He came to realize later that was not so about the people knowing about him, but the message was for him. When you asked all to close their eyes for prayer he did, and he said he had never done that before… We continue to see each other daily for a few minutes and encourage one another. God bless. Jim and Eileen Howarth, Staten Island, NY."

JANUARY EVENTS…

CHURCH AMONGST 400 BUILDINGS DESTROYED IN CANBERRA FIRE STORM -When the fire storm hit Canberra ( Australia 's capital) on Saturday, January 18, over 400 buildings were destroyed and four people lost their lives. New Creative Ministries Centre (NCMC), a church associated with the Apostolic Church of Australia was burned to the ground. But that did not stop Senior Pastor John McNamara from conducting their Sunday morning service in a nearby park. NCMC is the largest Charismatic/Pentecostal group in Canberra . They had been planning to rebuild, but felt they could not afford the cost of demolishing the 18-year old buildings. Now they don't have to worry about that! The buildings are mounds of brick and metal, ready to be cleared away!" Charities and mainstream denominations are preparing to receive designated donations to assist the less fortunate in Canberra, the ‘bush capital’ of Australia, in a spirit of ‘mateship,’ which again has become very evident at this time. THREE HUNDRED ATTEND ANNUAL COPGNY PRAYER SUMMIT - The fifteenth annual Prayer Summit, hosted by Concerts of Prayer Greater New York, saw 300 ministers from many different denominations and streams gather at the Tuscarora Inn in Pennsylvania for two days of intensive prayer and fasting for the spiritual wellbeing of the region. Chairman of COPGNY, Pastor Bob Johansson said that the prayer summit is “…the largest interdenominational group committed to prayer and each other." It was an outstanding time for most of the key leaders of the Northeast to gather together to be refreshed and to build relationships for mutual support for the furthering of the Kingdom of God .

CITY COVENANT COALITION WITH DR. DAVID IRELAND -  Dr. David Ireland was our special guest for CCC's first quarterly regional meeting at Bethel Gospel Tabernacle, Queens, NY on January 9. He spoke an inspiring message on "Becoming a World Class Leader." Based on 2 Tim 1:1-2, Dr. Ireland exhorted the 70 pastors present to challenge the process and be people of influence. He said that world class leaders are people who inspire a shared vision for a place, a people or a predicament in society. They believe that they can make a difference. In so doing, a good leader makes room for other's personalities. "There are people in your world that made adjustments to be there, and we have to be mindful of that." World class leaders lead the way because they know the way. They also know when to reduce the pace, to take a breather, they make people feel like heroes and they celebrate the accomplishment. This was a challenging and inspiring time for all attending.

JANUARY MINISTRY…

Last month we ministered at the following churches:

Sun 5th – Metro Church, San Diego, CA, Pastor Steve Barnard
Thurs 9th - City Covenant Coalition Quarterly Regional Meeting, Jamaica Queens, NY
Sat 11th - “A New Testament Leadership Paradigm” Conference, Evangel Church, NYC, Pastor Robert Johansson
Sun 12th - Harvest Fields Community Church, Bronx, NY, Pastor Mitchell Torres
Thurs 16th – F.A.I.T.H. Alliance Meeting, The Church Of Grace And Peace, Toms River, NJ
Sun 19th - The Church Of Grace And Peace, Toms River, NJ, Pastor Walt Healy
Sun 19th - Resurrection Church Anniversary Service, Brooklyn, NY, Pastor Joseph Mattera
Frid 24th - Sun 26th - Calvary Cathedral Of Praise, Brooklyn, NY, Pastor Marcus Roberts

** When we canceled our first vacation in six years due to my mother's passing last September, Pastor Steve Barnard of Metro Church, San Diego responded by offering Heather and I an all expenses paid vacation in San Diego, California for a week in the beautiful Loews Coronado Resort. This was a much needed break for us having been pretty hard at it (to say the least) over the last four years settling into our new life and ministry here in the Northeast of America. The beautiful California weather also gave us a welcome break from the Northeastern winter. Many just say, "God bless you - we're praying for you," but we wish to publicly thank Pastor Steve, Executive Pastors Andrea and Susan Giorgi and their church, for their practical blessing and love to us. We were rested and refreshed! We also ministered in three wonderful services on the Sunday.

** The Church of Grace and Peace, Toms River New Jersey , has been FMI's ministry base since our relocation to the United States . Along with my busy traveling schedule, I am also the overseer of missions, church planting and evangelism for this church, which by the grace of God, is being raised up to have a wider impact on the region. Senior Pastor Walt Healy has a vision for statewide unity and edification of the church through a new network called Faith Alliance involving seventy leaders from around the state. I serve on FA's executive council. It is always a pleasure to minister in your home church and on January 19 the spirit moved mightily, bringing a response that packed the altar from one side to the other as a result of my message, "The Evidence of Life."

** Pastor Marcus Roberts came to New York City 25 years ago from the West Indies . Since then he has raised up one of NYC’s largest ministries. Calvary Cathedral of Praise's new building occupies nearly a whole city block in Brooklyn, with several thousand calling this oasis their church home. I have ministered for Pastor Roberts several times since we arrived here and on this last occasion I spoke to his leaders on "The Apostolic Experience - An Examination of the Scriptural Basis of the Apostolic Reformation as it Has Unfolded in Australia and the World." The Sunday morning service featured the most polished and dynamic youth choir I have ever heard and that certainly was a help to me when I brought the word.
