JEFF BEACHAM'S
EDITORIAL – Unshakable Salt

INTRODUCTION
Recently, while staying in a hotel near
the church where I was ministering, I noticed something which, at first
glance,
seemed quite comical. There they were standing alone on the table - a
pair of shakers; only these ones had small packages of salt and pepper
inside, unable to be shaken out of the containers (see photo below).
A LIVING OXYMORON
I was more than amused by this sight and wondered,
'Why on earth would someone do that?' It seemed as irrational as some of
the other non-common-sensible paradoxes that have pervaded this great
country in recent years, such as the interview recently aired by one
TV channel of a pro-abortion 'Christian' woman who professed that she loved
Jesus and that she couldn't believe He wouldn't be in favor of women's
reproductive rights. Just like salt that can't get out of the shaker to
flavor or preserve, this woman was demonstrating that she was a living
oxymoron, unable
to
make a difference and as unacceptable as a 'Christian'
drug dealer or bank robber!
SALT OF THE EARTH
In Matthew 5:13, there is a strong comment on this
kind of spiritual paradox, "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how
can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to
be thrown out and trampled by men." Those professing Jesus as their
Lord and Savior are called the 'salt of the earth,' but if we lose our
Christian world view, we become unable to savor (preserve) our culture.
This pro-abortion 'Christian' woman has allowed the secular culture to
influence her opinion rather than taking a stand for the
preservation of life, which is at the center of God's heart.
A HARVEST OF HUMANITY
God has determined that there will be a harvest of
humanity in the future, at a time known only to Him. That harvest will
be hindered from maturing if the church surrenders its saltiness. Most
churches in America today spend most of their energy and resources
trying not to lose what they already have. A mission for the harvest has
been replaced by a maintenance mentality, and that might as well be a
commitment to death!
HOME MISSIONS?
Bill Peel, Pastor at Fellowship Bible Church in
Dallas, TX made this great observation, "Observing people make a beeline
for the parking lot at noon on Sundays has become, for me, a strangely
contemplative activity. I watch and wonder if these men and women see
any connection between the church service they’ve just attended and the
other 98 percent of their waking hours? Have they mentally checked God
off of their weekly to-do list or are they anticipating a week of
exciting opportunities as His ambassadors in the workplace? Contrary to
popular perception, U.S. Christians need not move to a Third World
country in order to make a significant contribution to the kingdom of
God and help fulfill the Great Commission. Perhaps the most significant
mission field in the world is right under our nose. There are 235
million non-Christians in America - the fourth largest non-Christian
nation in the world."
AT THE CROSSROADS
We are in danger of losing all saltiness primarily
because we have lost sight of the central component of our Christianity
- the Cross! As the great Celtic spiritual leader George McLeod said, "I
simply argue that the Cross should be raised at the center of the
marketplace as well as on the steeple of the church. I am recovering the
claim that Jesus was not crucified in a cathedral between two candles;
but on a cross between two thieves; on the town's garbage heap; at a
crossroad, so cosmopolitan they had to write His title in Hebrew and
Latin and Greek... at the kind of place where cynics talk smut, and
thieves curse, and soldiers gamble. Because that is where He died. And
that is what He died for. That is where church men ought to be and
what church men ought to be about." This is getting the salt out of the
shaker and not remaining 'unshakable salt.'
RESTORATION
Elisha, the prophet, foreshadowed a picture of how
the Church could be used to restore the land again. “Bring me a
new bowl,” he said, “and put salt in it.” So they brought it to him.
Then he went out to the spring and threw the salt into it, saying, “This
is what the LORD says: ‘I have healed this water. Never again will it
cause death or make the land unproductive.’” And the water has remained
wholesome to this day, according to the word Elisha had spoken. (2 Kings
2:20-22)

"Standing in the Gap" - Family
Research Council Sponsored Pastor's Conference in Washington, DC -
From May 10th-12th, 300 ministers from around the nation came to
Washington, DC as the guests of the Family Research Council, to be
briefed by some of the greatest political and religious leaders in
America on the most crucial issues in the current culture war. I was one
of several leaders from New Jersey to attend (see photo at right).
Congressman Walter Jones informed the conference of a bill he
is sponsoring that will allow preachers total freedom to say whatever
they want in thier pulpit (Bill Hrt235). "Religion can survive with freedom,
but religion without freedom will be very unstable…."
In regards to the present marriage debate, Senator Rick Santorum
from Pennsylvania said, "...there is a secular orthodoxy in the marriage
debate. Any other view will be suppressed." He encouraged pastors to
have the courage to stand up and speak the truth.
Mr. Patrick Fagan, from the Heritage Foundation reported,
"...marriage has always thrived, those that abandon it do not! The
sexual act, which results in a child coming into existence, is God being
obedient to man, whether within marriage or not. The center of
everything is the sexual act, where a man
and a woman almost become creators. The love of mother and father
separated feeds the couches of therapists.
When
mother and father belong to each other the child belongs to them and has
a sense of belonging. A child's heart is rent asunder when parents divorce.
America has an overwhelming culture of rejection. The big issue is the
nature of sexuality.... A billion homosexual acts cannot produce one
child!"
Some other notable speakers included Rev. Richardson, who said,
"Marriage is a religious rite - not a religious right!" Bishop
Wellington Boone, author of "Your Wife Isn't Your Momma" said,
"...creation began with a marriage and will end with a marriage."
Lawrence White said, "The enemy of our soul is a gradualist…. Each
time an abortion takes place, a little bit of the soul of America is
dying. We've allowed ourselves (no one has done it to us) to believe the
lie of separation of church and state."
Well known culture war general, Chuck Colson said, "The
Evangelical church has become 'mainstream' whereas the church should
always be counter-cultural. The Church is being attacked on two sides: 1)
The Islamic World is committed to take over the world. This is a front
of the Moral War. 2) The Secular Naturalists - post modernism,
relativism. personal autonomy, moral freedom. The Church has not been
effective in changing the culture because it has failed to engage the
culture. Too many people think that Christianity is just about 'me and
God.' The job of the Church is to bring Christian truth to bear in every
single area of life… The role of the Church is to defend the truth and
overcome evil with good…. Then we have to be able to take our message to
places where we see the biblical standard being challenged….
The defense of marriage is not a political issue - it is a moral issue.
Politics is all about creating a just society.

Last month was particularly busy with visits to San Diego (see
left) and Washington, DC, as well as all the
other places around the Northeast listed above. The Salvation Army Men's
Camp was a great time for me and the men, many of whom are finding their
spiritual feet coming from the streets of New York City. It was good to
get where the rubber meets the road.
San Diego is a wonderful city and it is always a joy to minister
there and catch up with old friends. It has the reputation of being one
of the best cities in America, which is evidenced by the fact that
everyone would like to live there, with property prices soaring.
Being out near Amish country in Northwestern Pennsylvania is a
contrast to the west coast, but is always a thrill to catch up with
Johnny and Juanita Bergusson, who run the largest Christian tape and
electronic company in America - Kingdom, Inc. They invited me to speak
at their first Kingdom Builders Retreat. They have been instrumental in
gathering a group of likeminded ministers in the region who have a heart
for unity. I topped off this visit by speaking at the churches of two of
those key leaders on Sunday, and it was a very profitable time.
The month ended on a high note when long time friend David Moyse
visited from Australia. David was formerly with the world renowned band
'Air Supply' and was one of the founding musicians at the Hillsong
Church. Over the years, he had been involved in some song writing and
production for their worship CD's. David and I ministered over the last
weekend of the month at Abundant Life Worship Center in Whippany, New
Jersey, with Pastor Joe and Debbi Arminio. There was a free worship
service on Friday night, a worship seminar on Saturday and two services
on Sunday morning. It was a busy weekend.
