JEFF BEACHAM'S EDITORIAL – Nuclear Giants and Ethical Infants

"We have grasped the mystery of the atom and rejected the Sermon on the Mount.... The world has achieved brilliance without conscience. Ours is a world of nuclear giants and ethical infants." - General Omar Bradley

INTR0DUCTION

The last hundred years have seen an explosion in technology. We have gone from the first flight with the Wright Brothers in 1903 to walking on the moon in 1969. Jet flight and the Nuclear Age gave way to the Space Age, which gave birth to the Information Age, which has exploded since then. Is there any limit to our technological expertise? Should there be any moral 'brake' to slow us down from what could be a technological calamity as a result of unrestrained development? Just because we can do it, should we do it?

AT WHAT COST?

Stem cell research is but one area where there is an unclear line between the positive motive of improving quality of life for those who have suffered a disability, and taking one life to preserve another. If a benefit is gained at the expense of embryonic life, then this is where technology and ethics collide! The question is, if adult and umbilical cord stem cells are available, why is there a persistence for the use of embryonic stem cells? The answer to this is that ethics and morality have not kept pace with the unfettered growth of technology.

culture of narcissism

Ethics must have as its ultimate aim the preservation, extension and multiplication of life, not from a uni-generational perspective, as our egocentric generation tends to think, but with a multi-generational viewpoint. Mark Steyn hits it right on the head, "Essentially modern post-Christian Europe, and Canada, and large parts of the United States... have replaced the traditional impulses of civilization, which is to breed, prosper, to expand and survive, with a culture of narcissism. I'd like to have... meaningless, promiscuous sex, and just think about myself all day long, and all week long, and all year long. But in the end, when you prioritize that, you actually destroy the culture that enables it. It's a completely absurd culture and brazen. And that's what we've done.... Most societies have built into their DNA the need to survive, the need to prosper, and the need to reproduce. And we have managed to lose that in an extraordinarily short period of time."

DO THE MATH!

Any culture that allows the multiplication rate to slip into the negative is a culture that values death more than life. That is what has happened in Europe, and it is getting that way here in the United States. The key word in all the foundational covenants that God made with Adam, Noah and Abraham was 'multiply!' Will we use our technology to pander to our selfish needs or will we see from God's perspective? He works multi-generationally and so should we.

The church was at one time, a strong arbiter in these issues, but has long since accepted its relegation by society to the ideological backwaters of our culture. I believe those days are coming to an end! Lord, let the church rise up and take back its rightful position of promoting life, liberty and morality. #

MAY EVENTS...

City Action Coalition Formation Meeting in Newark, NJ - On May 13th, myself and Walt Healy, another CAC Executive Council member, joined Pastor Gloria Harris for a formation meeting in Newark that she hosted on our behalf.

Over 40 local pastors and leaders joined us to hear about our efforts to have an impact on the Northeastern culture and see how they could be involved.

Family Research Council Hosts Second Pastor's Briefing in Washington, DC - FRC President, Tony Perkins spoke from Ezekiel 3:17 encouraging the pastors present "…to be a watchman on the wall!" Speakers and guests included Claude Allen, Assistant to President Bush on Domestic Policy, Mike Pense, from the US House of Representatives (R-IN), both of whom spoke on the dangers of stem cell research apart from adult and umbilical cord stem cells.

Other speakers were Senators Sam Brownback (R-KS) and Tom Delay (R-TX), Majority Leader in the House of Representatives, whom Tony Perkins introduced as "...a point man, they are always the first ones to come under fire...," in relation to the political attacks he has come under in recent times. The line up also included Mark Levin, renowned talk show host on New York's WABC Radio and Bill Maier who spoke on the Myths of Homosexuality.

Tommy Tenney showed a preview from a Hollywood production based on his book about Esther, called "One Night with the King." Starring Omar Sharif and Peter O'Toole, this movie promises to have a major impact similar to "The Passion."

In conjunction with this event, Bishop Harry Jackson hosted a press conference that focused on the stalling of Bush nominee, Judge Janis Brown to the Court of Appeals, D.C. Circuit. The sound bite was, "Up or Down for Janis Brown!" Senator Bill Frisk joined the conference along with many other key spiritual leaders from around the nation. This was covered by all the main networks including CNN and was carried live on C-Span.

Kings College, Whose Tenure in the Empire State Building is Under Threat, Partners with City Action Coalition for Regular Meetings with New York City's Spiritual Leaders - In an article, "Board of Bozos," in the New York Post on Tuesday, March 29, 2005, Naomi Schaefer Riley wrote, "Choosing to attend The King's College, an evangelical school based in the Empire State Building, instead of George Washington University was the 'best decision of my life,' says King's freshman Anthony Randazzo. But if state Board of Regents member John Brademas has his way, students like Randazzo might have to think twice before making a similar choice.

Brademas, 78, is leading a crusade that could deny accreditation to King's — despite ample evidence of the college's quality, including the professional views of the state Education Department. At best, Brademas has shown himself (and his fellow Regents) to be severely lazy. At worst, he's shown an anti-Christian bias.

Established in Briarcliff Manor, King's College had been authorized to confer degrees by the Board of Regents since 1955. About 10 years ago, it ceased operation; then, in 1999, was purchased by Campus Crusade for Christ, which moved it to the Empire State Building. Today the college has about 260 students, who attend classes on two floors of the building and live in apartments nearby. The school's mission is to offer a high caliber academic program with a Biblical worldview in order to train students to be national leaders.

Brademas, former president of NYU and a onetime congressman from Indiana, is a new member of the board. He's already gotten that [five year] extension reduced to one year, thereby severely impairing the college's ability to recruit students and faculty.... Brademas' crank complaints impressed his fellow Regents enough that the board put off voting on the matter until its March meeting.

The school's students and faculty are 'obviously disappointed,' says the college's president, J. Stanley Oakes. 'We can't prove it and we hope it's not true, but this looks like a case of bias.' Either way, Oakes explains, 'We have no forum in which to defend ourselves.' Indeed, the board is appointed by the Legislature and is then left to its own devices, unaccountable to anyone. King's has just filed an appeal, but even that has to be addressed to the Board of Regents itself. Oakes wonders, 'How can we expect to have justice when the foxes are guarding the henhouse?'"

On May 4th, Sheila Webber of Marriage Savers, wife of B.J. Webber, former chaplain to the Yankees, was one of the guests at our CAC meeting, hosted by Kings College. To register your support for King's College, go to http://www.tkc.edu/na.htm

NJ Statewide Prayer Leaders Convene Inter-Generational Prayer Meeting in State House - On May 3rd, the eve of the National Day of Prayer, Pray NJ facilitated an Intergenerational Prayer Meeting in the Assembly Room of the Capitol Building, in Trenton, NJ. Over 250 intercessors declared righteousness for New Jersey in the very room where the future of the state is decided. Associate worship leader at The Church of Grace and Peace, Adam Panepinto led worship on behalf of his generation of young adults.

UPDATE ON DAVID CARTLEDGE...

Following is a compilation of several recent reports from Marie Cartledge regarding her husband David's health resulting from an aggressive brain tumor. Although there have been many miracles, there are still many challenges:

"We had been in Queensland for three weeks and during this time I had noticed no improvement in David's ability to communicate through his speech and we were only home a couple of days when this worsened. On Sunday morning (May 29), very early about 4 am, I had to help him to the bathroom and found that he was having difficulty with his mobility. This occurred again around 7am, this is when I called the family and we decided he needed attention. He was hospitalized... and was taken to surgery immediately following a discussion with Dr. [Charlei] Teo.

Charlie advised us that... a cyst had formed on the scar tissue and needed to be removed and that it was merely a set back as what was left of the tumor from the previous surgery had actually shrunk. During the surgery, the cyst and scar tissue were removed and they were able to scrape out most of what was left of the original tumor. We are thanking God for this intervention.... He is certainly speaking better since the surgery, he cannot read although he can recognize some words, it is his perception sometimes the words are back to front. He is very good with numbers though....

I had to re-admit David to hospital yesterday (June 5), Dr. Charlie has inserted a shunt which removes the fluid from the cyst.... I had brought him home last Friday however, he did not pick up so this was the next step in our journey. Charlie has mentioned to us there is a lot of swelling in David's brain so we need to focus on that in prayer....

The shunt has worked and David has had a much better day, although he is in a little pain from this latest surgery, there is a marked improvement in his speaking, his understanding and also his mobility. God is so faithful, He is our refuge and strength, A VERY PRESENT HELP IN TIME OF NEED.

Both David and I know we have come this far by God's grace, and I need also to say that today he has felt that wonderful stirring of God in his spirit. We are taking one day at a time on this journey of miracles, thank you to each one, your love and concern, the powerful prayer and the phone calls, we are very strengthened by it all, we are all in this journey together."

"A Cause to Live By and to Die For!"

Western culture has become soft and mushy, and the Western Church has become the same. But when we read about Moses, Joshua, David, Elijah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, John the Baptist, Paul or even Jesus challenging authorities such as wayward kings, idolaters or pompous Pharisees, we don't see any of them doling out soft and mushy entreaties, but rather issuing challenging, often scathing indictments of their audience's willful blindness. In an age when everyone has come 'out of the closet,' it's time for the Church to do so too!

"Healing the Hemorrhage of Hell"

Why has soul-winning slowed down so in the West? We all hope to go to Heaven, but an unwritten rule for western preaching has become, ‘don’t mention the ‘H’ word! We don’t want to make potential believers uncomfortable by telling them that if they reject the gospel they will be headed to eternal punishment.’ We leave that in the fine print. The subject of Hell and eternal punishment was very important to Jesus. He taught more about it than He did about Heaven. Heaven has a road, but few travel it; Hell has no gate, but men will dig to get there.
