EDITORIAL – The United States of Entertainment

"We live in the United States of Entertainment.... The Commander in Chief is really the Celebrity in Chief." -Bernie Goldberg

INTRODUCTION

Nine-time Emmy Award winning writer, journalist, and political commentator Bernie Goldberg recently made the astute statement above, which just happens to fall in line with the theme of my previous editorial "Charisma Trumps Character" (FMI Report, January '09). Charisma is a primary value in a media driven culture, and that's the key!

OUR STORIES

Media has always played a major role in shaping cultures. Our culture is built on our history, mythology and heroes... in other words, the stories about our past, real and/or fanciful, concerning the exploits of those legendary figures we may honor. Whether those stories were preserved by a wandering story teller of ancient times, the parables of Jesus, or oral and written traditions, media has been the grout that has held together the bricks of our traditions.

A THIN VENEER

If we define media as the main method of disseminating stories to the people, then we have to see how the changing of our society's world view from Judeo/Christian to a largely secular viewpoint, over the last several decades, has altered all of our values. Values are the things we value! So, do we still value such things as loyalty, truthfulness, faithfulness, integrity, purity, etc.; or have our stories become as superficial as the thin veneer of history being taught in our schools these days, dating back not much further than the life of President Lincoln? Our thin-skinned historicity is very see-through compared with the historical depth of such nations as China and India, with 5,000 year old cultures.

DRIVEN TO DISTRACTION

Entertainment is defined as amusement, diversion and distraction. If so, from what...? Here in America, we are currently being shaken out of our rampant materialism. However, the irony is that expectations that the recession might drive us away from our superfluity and back to the basics of life has proved not to be the case. As it was in the Great Depression of the Thirties, people are looking for an escape from their encroaching problems, made worse by deteriorating financial conditions.

MUSHROOMS

Commercial media in America has treated us like mushrooms, as we say in Australia, kept us in the dark and fed on BS! We hardly hear anything about what's happening in the rest of the world. We are just lulled into an ever deeper stupor, while the world is on a highway to hell in a hand basket!

I want to challenge you to be more informed, less amero-centric and more globally aware in your outlook, less consumed with distraction and amusement, more concerned with the real, valuable things of life like loyalty, integrity and faithfulness. These are some of the things that we take with us to eternity when most all else is left behind! #

MEDICAL UPDATE

I am so grateful to everyone who responded to our appeal for prayer and support after my recent diagnosis of cancer in my esophagus. We are thankful that my liver was found to be clear.

As I write, I am in the middle of the second round of chemo, which I get once a week, accompanied with radiation five days a week. This is a day by day process, which is very debilitating. Most days, I can't do much more than just move from chair to chair around the house. I'm hoping to have more energy by the end of the week.

After this second round, I am thankfully having a break for a week and then there will be two more rounds.

We will send you an update toward the end of this week.

FEBRUARY EVENTS...

CCC Hosts The Rise and Fall of Leaders -

Christ Covenant Coalition (formally City Covenant Coalition) hosted a special members only meeting on February 25th in Brooklyn, NY. The topic was 'Reasons Why Leaders Rise and Fall.'

Bishop Joe Mattera, Pastor Michael Faulkner and myself shared our thoughts on this issue. Bishop Mattera cited the following reasons as among those why leaders fall:

I. They live out of their natural giftedness and spiritual anointing but do not build on character and integrity.
2. They have not learned how to process pain.
3. They are emotionally immature in certain areas of their lives.
4. They are quick to form an opinion and judge others.
5. They are not aware of their dark side and so live in self-deception.
6. They live for the future and are never living in the present.
7. They use people instead of loving people.
8. They have a heart for ministry more than a heart for God.
9. They do not receive correction or coaching from others.
10. They seek and need the approval of men more than the approval of God.

Star of The Screwtape Letters Play Says Pride at the Center of Man's Folly - Teresa Neumann www.breakingchristiannews.com

C. S. Lewis' The Screwtape Letters was adapted for the stage and recently played in Washington, DC.

Reporter Michelle A. Vu interviewed the star of the play, Max McLean, for the Christian Post. Excerpts from that interview follow:

Vu: How do you feel about playing a devil? Is it difficult because you are a Christian?

McLean: As a Christian, I think what has been very helpful about it is that he (Screwtape) exposes in me my pride because he is pure pride. So in order to play him you got to just go for those places which unfortunately were quite easy for me to find.

Which temptation from the play do you think is most frequently employed in today's modern society?

If you go to Mere Christianity, Lewis describes this world as enemy occupied territory. So it has a pervasive world view where being cool is better than being authentic, where superficiality is more important than substance, and I think if he (devil) can he'd like to stay on the external and not deal with the character issues, which is most firmly rooted in humility. He wants us to get outside of ourselves and that is why he wants so much noise so we don't have any quiet and we can't really reflect.

What do you hope your audience will walk away with after watching this play?

I think we need to take satan very seriously. In the Middle Ages there was this movement to portray satan with horns and a tail, and it's interesting because that has been a sort of common comical caricature of satan. But of course what they were doing was they knew that satan did not like to be mocked so they were mocking him. And why would they mock? Because mocking him hurts his pride.

FOUR ESSENTIAL MESSAGES AVAILABLE THROUGH FMI...

All Now Available to Download on MP3

NEW! Turning the Hand of God

Can we turn curses into blessings? Nineveh’s repentance turned God’s hand - He’ll turn curses into blessing; He’ll turn your life around; He’ll turn your city around. Learn how to change the worst circumstances that life could throw at you into great opportunities for victory!

Learn how God is working for victory right now!

NEW! The Chosen
Most are invited, but only some are picked out of the crowd. Is it our free will or God's election? God calls everyone and gives them the power to respond - but to be chosen, we must respond to the call, using the power God gave us to take on the character of Christ.

Learn how to know what you were chosen for!

Multiplication In Our Generation Part Two
Once we are mature as Christians and able to reproduce spiritually, the Father is looking for the fruit that He expects us to present to Him. Pursuit of our own spiritual growth at the expense of evangelism brings glory only to us, when much fruit of souls brings glory to the Father, and all our prayers are answered!

Passing the Baton

Half of the world's 6.5 billion inhabitants are under 20 years old.... A global youth culture is forming, and Christians must learn to adjust to it. Some are already claiming that the church must be completely re-invented. The newly-forming youth culture depends less on scientific and rational thought and tends more toward seeking to experience spiritual things personally. Those seeking spiritual experiences will be disappointed by a church offering only information about God.

All available on DVD and CD. To order, click here.
