INTRODUCTION We left for Australia and New Zealand on February 2nd, after an unexpected challenge with my health the week or so before! My first six month check up thankfully confirmed there was no reoccurring cancer, however two small blood clots were found in my lungs.
After three days in the hospital and an assurance that I would be checked regularly while I was away, I was released to travel down under. Nothing was going to stop me anyway! This was the trip we were supposed to go on last February, but was cancelled because of my cancer treatments. And, I hadn't seen my kids down there for three years!
AMAZING COINCIDENCE I had received an email from a young friend, Emma in Canberra, Australia a week before we left, telling me she was leaving for the UK and would be there indefinitely on a mission. She also said that her father had just been diagnosed with esophageal cancer (the same as I had)! Unbeknown to her, we were due to arrive in Canberra from the other side of the world the day before she left for the UK! This amazing 'coincidence' enabled us to be with her and her family for one night and minister to that whole situation. I had prophesied over Emma when she was five, and we have corresponded for the last 23 years.
The following weekend, Melva ministered at a women's conference at Parkway Church in Canberra (Australia's Capitol), and I spoke for their main service on Sunday. Out of my experience over the last year, I spoke on how to get through any trial and be an overcomer!
HILLSONG VISION The following Tuesday, we were back in Sydney and were invited to attend the Hillsong Leader's Vision Night. For 16 years, I was a pastor at Sydney Christian Life Centre, which is now the Hillsong city campus.
Three thousand plus leaders were at that leader's meeting with an average age in the low twenties. It was just an amazing experience to see how this church has excelled in reaching, empowering and releasing the next generation of nation changing leaders!
Senior Pastor Brian Houston shared his vision to have a Hillsong Church in every major city of the world! Recently, former Hillsong Youth Pastor Phil Dooley started Hillsong in Cape Town, South Africa, with over 3,000 at the first meeting!
VISION TO REALITY Close friend Robert Fergusson, an elder and one of the main preachers at Hillsong, reminded me how we had prayed for years during the nineties that Frank Houston's (Brian's father) vision that the city church would one day have 10,000 in attendance would come to pass. Even though it seemed a little beyond reach at the time when the church was barely 2,000, today Frank's vision is a reality!
KIWI POLYNESIANS We flew to New Zealand a few days later and ministered at a wonderful Polynesian church in Auckland that weekend. We received many testimonies of the impact we had there (see below) and it was good to spend a lot of quality time with Pastors Lui and Ane Ponifasio. It is central to my ministry to encourage senior leaders.
It was good to catch up with Paul De Jong while we were in Auckland. Paul and I worked together for a lot of years in Sydney before he pioneered what is now the largest church in New Zealand.
We caught up with family and friends for several days in my home town of Hastings. My elder brother, Greg, is a medical doctor, but he also owns a Jaguar factory (www.beacham-jaguar.co.nz). 'WELLYWOOD' By God's grace, the next weekend we were able to have an impact at Elim Christian Church, Porirua, just outside of New Zealand's capitol, Wellington. Pastors Ken and Tai Roach have a church full of life and young people. We met with and encouraged their leaders and ministered twice on Sunday.
Wellington is now called "Wellywood" by many of its inhabitants because
major feature films are made there these days, including 'The Lord of
the Rings,' 'King Kong' and some of 'Avatar,' to name just a few.
HEAVEN ON EARTH Finally, we spent a few days resting at my friend Andy Smith's place in Pelorus, at the top of New Zealand's South Island. His place is the closest I've ever been to heaven on earth!
After three weeks of mostly flip flops, shorts and t-shirts, we were held up for a night in LA on our return flight because of a major snow storm in America's Northeast, our home.
PAYBACK God's grace and favor were obviously present on this trip from the moment we left JFK until the minute we returned to Newark. Every single minute was thoroughly enjoyable and impactful. My wife remarked that she believed God was just blessing me in light of the testing trials I have had to endure over the last year. I can't disagree with that!
