EDITORIAL – Multiplication - That's the Name of the Game!

INTRODUCTION

Pop star Bobby Darin had a hit many years ago in which he sang, "Multiplication... that's the name of the game, and each generation plays the same." The question is, have we been doing what God (Genesis 1:28) and Bobby both told us to do?

SPIRITUAL REPRODUCTION

Statistics show that 98% of church growth in America is transfer growth. New life into the Body is restricted to 2%. This is one of the main factors contributing to lack of church growth in America. For spiritual life to increase there must be spiritual reproduction, both on a micro (personal and relational evangelism) and ultimately on a macro level (church planting and releasing ministries).

BACK IN THE DAY

A random survey of any congregation will reveal that only 1% or less become affective Christians through traditional evangelistic efforts, such as street witnessing, handing out tracts, door knocking, etc. The American Church is still operating under the old paradigm of fifties evangelism where the evangelist does all the soul winning (e.g. Billy Graham). Although this was very affective in its day, it is not that much any more.

RELATIONAL EVANGELISM
The cross is vertical and horizontal – our Christianity often focuses on our relationship with God (vertical) at the expense of our relationships with those in our sphere of influence (horizontal). However, the economy of the Kingdom is based on equal relationships in both directions. Nearly 99% of people become Christians through relationships they have with family members, co-workers or friends that are already Christians.

A WORD TO THE WISE
Proverbs 11:30 says, “He who wins souls is wise.” If you want to win someone to Christ, use wisdom! Wisdom is not just the right application of knowledge; it is also applying it to the right time frame. What was wise 30 years ago may not be today!

In 1 Chronicles 12:32 we learn that the "Sons of Issachar” not only understood the times they were in, but they knew what the nation should do. Today, there are modern men and women of Issachar. They are the ones who try to understand what is happening in order to decide what should be done. They look at both the past and the present to determine the right action for the future.

A PLACE WHERE YOU BELONG

Relational Evangelism is the most effective form of reaching the lost, and because we live in the 21st Century, we must be prepared to reach people in a 21st Century way. The world may change, but the Word doesn’t!

We need to stop thinking of the Church as an institution. Regardless of the language we’ve used, we boomers have tended to see the Church as an organization, but emerging generations are desperately looking for community. We need to present the Church as a place where you belong, a family where everybody knows your name.

FRESH ETERNAL TRUTHS
Although we may know that the Church is a community, emerging generations have never seen it that way. They’ve seen a list of rules, not a loving community. This is a prime example of an opportunity to re-state the eternal truths of the Bible in a fresh, contemporary way.

In order for us to fulfill God's command to multiply, let's do what Bobby sang about!

FEEDBACK... Passing the Baton

"Thank you for the timely message, Passing the Baton, which confirmed in my mind and heart all that I've been concerned about, praying about, but not really knowing what further to do. I see now that prayer, but also His power and His passion, can reach others who need to know Christ. We have 3 of 5 children (over the age of 25) who've been churched but now have no desire for anything related to church. Understandably, we have failed to pass the baton. I agree with what you said about needing to ask for forgiveness first, then "doing" all we can in His power and passion to get them to acknowledge Jesus Christ as the answer to every problem and concern they have in their lives. But just how we do that is the question?

I also want to thank you for praying God's love over me. I really needed that touch. Things in life are not always what they should be and this is just one of those times. God is so good to lavish His love on us, even when we think we don't deserve it.

God has richly blessed your life and ministry and will continue to strengthen and vitalize it as He builds you up physically to continue to be an Overcomer. He has overcome sin, death, and satan. Amen. Thank you for being used of God. In Him, River of God soon-to-be-Member, Enola, PA"

"Hey Jeff, So enjoyed reading the articles and what you wrote ("Veterans Fighting Alongside Young Warriors" FMI Report, Dec. 09)! It was right on track and powerful! We all need each other to fight effectively. I am praying for a quick and speedy recovery for you! Blessings and much love, Jo Anna Lea, TX"

Freedom Live Worship Concert Recording

On Sunday, February 10th, I had the honor of emceeing a live worship concert recording with my close friends, Adam and Elizabeth Panepinto. Adam is the worship director at our home base - The Church of Grace and Peace in Toms River, NJ. A capacity house lined up across the parking lot to get into the church an hour before the concert was to begin.

The night was electric, with a powerful anointing present, but it was back down to earth the next day when Adam and the team spent all week in post production!

Star of The Screwtape Letters Play Says Pride Is at the Center of Man's Folly (Teresa Neumann, www.breakingchristiannews.com)

In an earlier report we shared with our BCN viewers about C. S. Lewis' The Screwtape Letters which was adapted for the stage and recently played in Washington, D. C.

Reporter Michelle A. Vu interviewed the star of the play, Max McLean, for the Christian Post. Excerpts from that interview follow:

Vu: How do you feel about playing a devil? Is it difficult because you are a Christian?

McLean: As a Christian, I think what has been very helpful about it is that he (Screwtape) exposes in me my pride because he is pure pride. So in order to play him you got to just go for those places which unfortunately were quite easy for me to find.

Which temptation from the play do you think is most frequently employed in today's modern society?

If you go to Mere Christianity, Lewis describes this world as enemy occupied territory. So it has a pervasive world view where being cool is better than being authentic, where superficiality is more important than substance, and I think if he (devil) can he'd like to stay on the external and not deal with the character issues, which is most firmly rooted in humility. He wants us to get outside of ourselves and that is why he wants so much noise so we don't have any quiet and we can't really reflect.

What do you hope your audience will walk away with after watching this play?

I think we need to take satan very seriously. In the Middle Ages there was this movement to portray satan with horns and a tail, and it's interesting because that has been a sort of common comical caricature of satan. But of course what they were doing was they knew that satan did not like to be mocked, so they were mocking him. And why would they mock? Because mocking him hurts his pride.

FOUR ESSENTIAL MESSAGES AVAILABLE THROUGH FMI...

All Now Available to Download on MP3

NEW! Turning the Hand of God

Can we turn curses into blessings? Nineveh’s repentance turned God’s hand - He’ll turn curses into blessing; He’ll turn your life around; He’ll turn your city around. Learn how to change the worst circumstances that life could throw at you into great opportunities for victory!

Learn how God is working for victory right now!

NEW! The Chosen
Most are invited, but only some are picked out of the crowd. Is it our free will or God's election? God calls everyone and gives them the power to respond - but to be chosen, we must respond to the call, using the power God gave us to take on the character of Christ.

Learn how to know what you were chosen for!

Multiplication In Our Generation, Part Two
Once we are mature as Christians and able to reproduce spiritually, the Father is looking for the fruit that He expects us to present to Him. Pursuit of our own spiritual growth at the expense of evangelism brings glory only to us, when much fruit of souls brings glory to the Father, and all our prayers are answered!

Passing the Baton

Half of the world's 6.5 billion inhabitants are under 20 years old.... A global youth culture is forming, and Christians must learn to adjust to it. Some are already claiming that the church must be completely re-invented. The newly-forming youth culture depends less on scientific and rational thought and tends more toward seeking to experience spiritual things personally. Those seeking spiritual experiences will be disappointed by a church offering only information about God.
